I'm sure that you have heard the saying that "a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." No more factual statement was ever uttered (thank you, Capt. Obvious). However, what's is left unsaid is anything about the journey itself, and therein lies the real story.
Unless you've been stranded on a desert island or lost in space for the last 20 years or born yesterday (which means that you wouldn't be reading this), I'm sure that you have heard of the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy. What if the story consisted of "two elves go on a walk" or "Sam and Frodo take a hike?" What makes the "Lord of the Rings" such a fascinating story is the adventures and characters they meet along the way.
The "journey" is what is important that is what this website is all about. For me, it has always been about "what's next," "how can I do this," or "I wonder?" and the real kicker is "what if I do this?".
I don't remember the actual date I started this "journey" of mine. Still, I remember the moment I decided to begin it. I was walking the hallway at my office, and "I wondered what it would be like to use statistics to follow a baseball team for a season." Another two or three steps down the hallway, and it hit me, why should I follow one team when I can track them all. At this time, the only thing that I had concerned myself with was wins and losses. I had no idea of the level of effort required; I had just taken that "first step," and I had no idea where I was going.
Now in the interest of full disclosure, this journey will include some mathematics. Don't stick your fingers in your ears and say "I can't hear you!" It won't be all about mathematics; this is a sports website, after all. The last time that I looked, I saw that people are still playing sports. Some of those people are characters who have made lasting impacts on all of us. Also, some of those characters have fascinating stories that I have learned while on this journey.
I'm reasonably confident that I won't win any Academy Awards for my story or make millions of dollars in royalties. But I'm also pretty sure that you will have some fun and despite your best efforts, you will learn a thing or two.
